CHAPTER 19

THE PIVOT

Change is hard. Control what you can control: your work ethic and your attitude.

Once I had processed my disappointment and the sense of betrayal following the Boston University fiasco, I wasn’t going to drown in a pool of my own tears. I started by making some very uncomfortable phone calls to inform all the schools I had just said no to that I was starting the recruitment process again and was back to square one. The guidance counselor who had been with me from day one at Sandburg, Mrs. Blaschek, was willing to write new letters of recommendation for me since the spring semester of my senior year was coming to an end. She’d never seen anything like this, and was fairly confused herself, but helped me through the chaos every step of the way. This wasn’t how anyone had imagined the end of the year playing out, especially me, but nothing about my life had been a straight shot and I knew I would recover from this latest, unexpected slam.

Initially, as some full-scholarship offers began rolling in again, I felt pressured to pivot and figure out what to do next, quickly. Obviously, based on my past behavior, you can tell that’s not something I like to do. I excel at making snap decisions on the ice, but a lot of that is because I’m skilled at anticipating the play before it happens. There was no anticipating this. When it comes to making decisions, I need time to process all the facts as well as the pros and cons, and I want to be able to ask questions if I have them so I can make the very best decision. This was too much to process instantly, especially considering everything I had going on with school and hockey.

When everything felt like it was falling apart in my life—the hardest being losing Liz, to the other things that became so minor, from getting cut from the Olympic Team to losing a gold medal in the fashion we did, and the fiasco with Boston University—I leaned on those who knew me best to get through it all. One of my coaches brought up the idea of attending prep school for a postgraduate year—essentially, a fifth year of high school. That’s when everything changed and I felt some of the pressure give.

I had missed a lot of school and knew I could be more academically prepared heading into college. I love learning. I also wasn’t in any rush, since I knew the sooner I got through my four years of college hockey, the sooner I’d be looking for a full-time job, and that job wouldn’t be playing the sport I loved.
